ROARING, because we want to be brave in the face of climate breakdown and other challenges. BROOK, because as a small family foundation, we know that we are just one tributary among countless others, flowing towards a more viable future. There are dozens of Roaring Brooks throughout New England; the one we know best is on the western slope of Mt. Greylock.
We support mission-driven nonprofits working within four interwoven areas of focus, with most of our partner projects touching on multiple areas:
- Rivers, Coasts & Oceans
- Resilient Communities
- Youth Leadership
- Healthy Foodsheds
We look for organizations with clear and concise mission statements; creative, experienced, and stable leadership; sound strategic plans; substantive evidence of program impacts; a demonstrated capacity to collaborate across all boundaries; high standards of governance; strong balance sheets with diverse revenue streams; and informative periodic updates, including annual reports.
Though based in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, we support projects from as far north as Rockland, Maine; as far south as the South Carolina lowlands; and as far west as Albuquerque, New Mexico. By engaging with issues and areas of the country wherein we have direct experience, and by listening closely to mission leadership & program staff with humility, respect and open minds, we honor the exemplary philanthropic legacy of John C. Whitehead.

Roaring Brook works hard to align investment assets with programmatic values and objectives. Though we do not accept unsolicited proposals, we welcome dialogue and potential collaboration regarding areas of shared concern.
